FLEXCAIR TRAINING IN BRUNSSUM

Do you want to work on the control and coordination of your back and pelvis? At Fysio in Balance in Brunssum, we use the Flexchair as a tool within physiotherapeutic treatment. With targeted exercises and feedback on a screen, you practice performing movements more consciously and accurately.

What is the Flexchair?

The Flexchair Trunk Balance Trainer is a movable chair with a saddle-shaped seat. While sitting on it, you can move the seat in different directions using your pelvis and trunk.

A sensor records the movements of the seat and displays them on a screen. This gives you immediate feedback on how you move and allows you to practise following a direction or pattern.

The Flexchair is a training tool. During your assessment, we determine whether this type of exercise is suitable for your symptoms and goals.

What do you train with the Flexchair?

During training, you work on controlling movements of your pelvis and trunk. The focus is on control and coordination: can you perform a movement smoothly, guide it accurately and adjust it when needed?

Depending on your goals, we focus on:

  • Moving your pelvis and lower back with awareness.

  • Coordinating your muscles during movement.

  • Controlling the amount of movement and muscular effort.

  • Moving in different directions with control.

The exercises are tailored to your abilities and gradually adjusted.

When can Flexchair training be used?

Your physiotherapist may use the Flexchair when practising movement control fits your treatment plan. For example, it may be used for back problems or difficulty controlling movements of your pelvis and trunk.

Not every back problem requires the same exercises. We therefore first assess which factors are relevant to your situation. Together, we then decide whether Flexchair training would be a useful addition to your treatment.

What happens at your first appointment?

We begin by discussing your symptoms, daily activities and what you would like to be able to do again. This is followed by a physical assessment, which includes looking at how you move.

If the Flexchair is suitable for your treatment, we explain how the chair and screen work. You start with simple movements to become familiar with the training.

Your physiotherapist guides you through the exercises and discusses any observations. The results on the screen provide information about how you perform the exercise. On their own, they do not explain the cause of your symptoms.

What does the training involve?

You sit on the Flexchair with your feet on the floor. By moving your pelvis and trunk, you control a pointer on the screen. Depending on the exercise, you might follow a line or move towards a specific point.

The screen provides immediate feedback. This helps you see whether your movement matches the task and learn how to make adjustments. Your physiotherapist helps you perform the exercise appropriately.

As you improve, we can adjust the difficulty of the exercises, taking your symptoms, fatigue and goals into account.

What can you expect from the training?

The aim is to develop greater control and confidence when moving your pelvis and trunk. The benefits depend on your individual situation and how the training fits into the rest of your treatment.

We therefore look beyond the exercises on the screen and consider what you notice in everyday life. Is moving easier? Can you perform activities more comfortably? We use this information to assess your progress.

Flexchair training can be combined with other exercises, strength training and guidance on gradually increasing your activities.
