MANUAL THERAPY IN BRUNSSUM
Do you have pain, or do you notice that your neck, back, or another joint moves less smoothly? You can come to Fysio in Balance in Brunssum for manual therapy. We examine your complaints and determine which treatment suits your situation and what you want to be able to do again.
What is manual therapy?
Manual therapy is a specialisation within physiotherapy that focuses on joint problems and movement. A manual therapist has completed additional training after qualifying as a physiotherapist.
During the assessment, your manual therapist examines joint mobility, muscle function and how you move. We also discuss your daily activities and factors that may influence your symptoms.
Treatment may include hands-on techniques, exercises and advice. The aim is to make movement easier and improve your ability to manage everyday activities.
What conditions can we help with?
Manual therapy may be considered for symptoms such as:
-
Neck pain or difficulty turning your head.
-
Back pain and spinal stiffness.
-
Headaches that may be associated with neck problems.
-
Shoulder problems involving restricted movement.
-
Pain or reduced mobility in other joints.
Whether manual therapy is appropriate depends on your symptoms and the assessment findings. Restricted movement does not automatically mean that a joint needs hands-on treatment.
What happens at your first appointment?
We begin by discussing your symptoms, health and goals. When did your symptoms begin? Which movements cause difficulty? What do you notice during work, sport or everyday activities?
This is followed by a physical assessment. We examine, for example, your joint mobility, muscle strength and how you perform certain movements. We also assess whether treatment is safe and suitable for you.
We discuss the findings and agree on a treatment plan together. If other care or further assessment appears necessary, we discuss this with you.
What does the treatment involve?
Your manual therapist may use different techniques to move a joint. Mobilisation involves gentle, controlled movements. Manipulation involves a short, quick movement, which may produce a popping sound.
Manipulation is not necessary for every condition. Before treatment, we explain which technique we recommend, why, and its potential benefits and risks. You can always tell us if you would prefer not to have a particular technique.
Alongside hands-on treatment, your plan may include exercises and advice. For example, you may work on mobility, strength or gradually returning to your activities.
What can you expect from treatment?
Some people notice that movement becomes easier or pain decreases after treatment. For others, changes happen gradually. Results and the number of appointments vary from person to person.
Throughout treatment, we review your progress together. We consider your symptoms as well as what you are able to do again. Based on this, we adjust the approach or discuss other options.
How does it differ from physiotherapy?
Both physiotherapy and manual therapy aim to improve movement and function. A manual therapist has additional knowledge and skills in assessing and treating joint problems.
The approaches overlap: exercises, education and your active participation also play an important role in manual therapy. We determine which approach best suits your individual situation.
